Oh. Hey. I was supposed to do a “Bonus Features” article every week, wasn’t I? Well, I’m back! And I’m bringing with me what is one of the more bizarre Blu-ray extras I’ve seen so far. And that’s saying something, because I’ve seen a lot of bonus material.

This particular clip comes from the SUPERMAN RETURNS Blu. The funny thing about it, though, is that it’s not about SUPERMAN RETURNS, but really about Peter Jackson’s 2005 KING KONG remake. The story goes like this…

In the early 2000s, it just so happened that both the production of KING KONG and SUPERMAN RETURNS overlapped. While SUPERMAN RETURNS director Bryan Singer was in the pre-production phase of his film, Peter Jackson was so far along into KING KONG that he was actually suffering from a bit of sleep deprivation. Now, I don’t know if you know this or not, but directors have to take physical examinations before embarking on a massive production. The reason being that if the director — the captain of this ship — goes down, then their is a very good risk that the shooting of the film will too. In situations where the director might be incapable of continuing, another director will swoop in to handle shooting for a day or two (prime example: Joss Whedon recently stepping in for Zack Snyder on JUSTICE LEAGUE). Such was the case with KING KONG, a notoriously grueling shoot that apparently caught up with Peter Jackson at one point. In swoops director Bryan Singer to handle a day of filming.

Singer, who had been video journaling his own movie at the time (remember those?) documented what has to be the oddest bit of behind-the-scenes footage I’ve seen in quite some time. Honestly, I’m still not sure if this is a joke or not. Check it…
