Here’s another one that I haven’t read yet but definitely shows promise. It’s called VS., and it comes to us courtesy of Image Comics, a publisher that has undergone quite a transformation in recent years. While the likes of Spawn, Savage Dragon, Witchblade, and (occasionally) Cyberforce are still there, the company as a whole has been experiencing a sort of golden age. A lot of which has to do with Image embracing the creator-owned spirit that launched the publisher in the first place.

Oh. And Walking Dead might have a little something to do with it too.

Back to VS.!

Superstar artist Esad Ribić (Secret Wars, Uncanny X-Force) will make his creator-owned debut, teaming up with acclaimed writer Ivan Brandon (BLACK CLOUD, DRIFTER) for the darkly satirical sci-fi series VS this February from Image Comics. Painted colors from Nic Klein (DRIFTER) and design by Tom Muller round out the powerhouse creative team.War has become a spectator sport.

Privately funded armies of superstar soldiers march into battle for fame, profit, and the glory of their sponsor nations.

When a new generation of soldiers arrive, top gladiator Satta Flynn is about to discover how fleeting the limelight can be.

“Making VS is a dream,” said Ribić. “After all these years, it feels great to be able to create my own world and tech from scratch.”

“Working with Esad is mindblowing,” added Brandon. “I want to live in this world. Probably very briefly, as it’s incredibly dangerous.”

Now, I’ve read Ivan Brandon’s Black Cloud, and it was a curious urban fantasy that just might suck you in as you try to unravel it. Meanwhile, Esad Ribic is easily one of the best artists working in comics today. His work on Marvel’s Thor: God of Thunder comic inspired that Valkyrie/Hela dream sequence in Thor: Ragnarok.

Basically, Ribic gets the benefit of the doubt based on his art style alone. That, coupled with Brandon’s mind-bending concepts makes VS. worth a pre-order at least. Definitely, ask your local comic shop to carry it. Or, if you’re lazy, look for it when it hits comic book stores Wednesday, February 7th.
