Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing but appreciation for the original Star Wars cast. However, as anyone who had to stomach Expendables II can tell you, bringing back actors who are past their prime can be a mixed bag of nostalgia and skepticism. Last Saturday’s SNL sketch nailed that nagging concern right on the head, poking fun at what could be a potentially tragic decision by the filmmakers behind Star Wars VII.
Is this ageism? Possibly. But I don’t think it is unreasonable to be a little unsure about our beloved franchise’s inclusion of Carrie Fischer, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill. Especially if you saw Ford in Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Here’s hoping.
