The Simpsons, one of T.V’s greatest and longest running shows, has been dealt a serious blow today.
Harry Shearer, the voice talent behind the characters Ned Flanders, Mr. Burns, Principal Skinner, and more has quit the show. Details are sparse, but two tweets are how Shearer let the world know:
from James L. Brooks’ lawyer: “show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best.”. (1/2)
— Harry Shearer (@theharryshearer) May 14, 2015
This because I wanted what we’ve always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best. (2/2) — Harry Shearer (@theharryshearer) May 14, 2015
While this appears to be about Shearer’s desire for “freedom to do other work” it may also be about merchandising payments according to TMZ. Whatever lead to this it is a huge loss for the show and it’s unclear whether they will find a replacement or just right all of those characters off. Either way it’s going to be an interesting two years over in Springfield. As a side note, if you are interested to know more about the man behind the voices here is a short interview with Shearer where he talks about his music projects and even does some of the voices that now won’t be on the show.
UPDATE: Showrunner Al Jean has confirmed with Esquire that the voices well be recast with new talent. So the show will go on.)
