I have a kind of nostalgic bond with 1998’s Metal Gear Solid.
The summer prior to my freshmen year of college, I worked as a temp in order to pay for school (food, gas, etc). I was down to a few hundred dollars after purchasing textbooks and other necessities. Which is around the point that I decided that I needed some form of escapism that didn’t involve spending money after class. I purchased Hideo Kojima‘s Metal Gear Solid for $50 or so and proceeded to spend my non-study hours exploring every nook and cranny of Alaska’s Fox Archipelago.
Pathetically and awesomely, that game was the one constant during a time when everything around me was changing dramatically.
The following 1980s-styled trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain isn’t quite the same nostalgic haze that I referred to above, but it perfectly captures exactly what it felt like playing Snake Plissken all those years ago.
Well done, Mr. Max Scoville and IGN.
