Today, the first trailer for “SICARIO 2: SOLDADO” was released. A direct sequel to “SICARIO” (2015), Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin will be reprising their respective starring roles as lawyer-turned-undercover assassin Alejandro Gillick and CIA agent Matt Graver. The plot still involves the drug cartels, only now the only contraband they’re smuggling is terrorists into American soil. The CIA has tasked Matt and Alejandro to eliminate the problem. The original film was a no-holds-barred, graphically violent depiction of the American government’s involvement in the so-called “War on Drugs”. I expect more action sequences, plot twists, shocks, and philosophical debates from the sequel. Also, the sequel’s title, soldado, is Spanish for “soldier”. All the players we’ve seen since the first film are exactly that: Soldiers…pawns in their institutions’ superfluous war.
In addition to Brolin and Del Toro, the cast also includes Matthew Modine, Catherine Keener, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Jeffrey Donovan. Emily Blunt and director Denis Villeneuve decided not to return. Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima has directed the sequel, which is written by the first film’s scribe, Taylor Sheridan.
“SICARIO 2: SOLDADO” will be released on June 29th, 2018.
