When we aren’t watching movies or playing video games we’re listening to them. And 2016, like most years, provided a steady array of soundtracks that allowed us to relive our favorite gaming moments and reenvision this year’s cinematic highlights.

There was Junkie XL’s “Beat It”-inspired Deadpool score, Michael Giacchino’s psychedelic sitar plucking in Doctor Strange, Henry Jackman’s operatic clashing of the Gods in Civil War, Shadow Warriors‘ rollicking/metal af riffing, and a surprisingly authentic recreation of the Blackxploitation sound by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad for Luke Cage. As always, even when the movies or games get a bit formulaic, you never quite know what to expect from the music of the action genre.top-10-week-52-630x640Below is Action A Go Go’s year-end “mixtape,” a collection of some of the most emotionally affecting and just plain badass tracks released between January and December.
