In our continuing direction towards dissecting soundtracks, AAGG and Road Tunes Reviews have returned with the latest Wall of Soundtrack podcast. This time, the topic of examination is Michael Mann’s 2001 biopic, Ali. Michael Mann is a director known for his action dramas, and he is also known for his use of music (just look at Miami Vice, the TV show!). The man has an almost intuitive sense about which scenes and musical songs mesh together, similar to Martin Scorsese. For Ali, he used R&B and soul music from the 1960s and 1970s, he even brought in modern artists like Alicia Keys and R. Kelly to add newer songs with a vintage soulful feel. We discussed the songs and how they relate to the scenes in which they were utilized and the social mores of the time periods depicted in the film. Check it out below!
