Nearly forty years after RAD first introduced audiences to Cru Jones and Helltrack, the film continues to inspire BMX riders and movie fans alike. As excitement builds around the HELLTRACK Kickstarter, Action A Go Go (AAGG) caught up with original RAD co-writer Sam Bernard to discuss why the film has endured, what made its story so timeless, and what fans can expect from this new adventure.
Action A Go Go: RAD has remained a cult favorite for forty years. Why do you think the film still resonates with audiences today?
Sam Bernard: I think it simply comes down to the bicycle. When a kid or anyone first learns to ride, it’s a seminal moment. They taste new freedom, their world is instantly expanded while experiencing a thrill like no other before. What Rad did was show even more possibilities for the oldest and most used mode of transportation vehicle in the world.
AAGG: When did you first start thinking about revisiting the world of RAD and continuing Cru Jones’ story?
Sam Bernard: Pretty much since the beginning. The world my partner Geoffrey Edwards and I created presented an expanding cultural boom. We’ve had many discussions on what comes next? Some years back we were close to launching a sequel.
Unfortunately, due to rights issues it didn’t come to fruition.
AAGG: HELLTRACK follows Cru as a mentor to his grandson Billy. What drew you to that generational approach?
Sam Bernard: I have to throw that to Steve Stern and Bill Allen who came up with that angle. Personally, I am very pleased with it as it’s organic and, as you implied, introduces Rad and HELLTRACK to new generations.
AAGG: How has Cru Jones changed since fans last saw him crossing the finish line in 1986?
Sam Bernard: I will only say, READ THE BOOK! And you will find out.

AAGG: What parts of RAD were absolutely essential to preserve when developing HELLTRACK?
Sam Bernard: At its core, Rad was an underdog story which I believe is essential in growing the HELLTRACK franchise.
AAGG: How involved was Bill Allen in shaping the older version of Cru Jones?
Sam Bernard: Very involved. Bill has become the face of Rad and now his legacy picks up on that. He’s spearheaded HELLTRACK.
AAGG: Were there any story ideas that ultimately didn’t fit the spirit of RAD?
Sam Bernard: There is always lots of talk about what direction a story can take. It’s like they say, throw the spaghetti against the wall and see what sticks!
AAGG: What do you hope longtime RAD fans feel when they close the final page of HELLTRACK?
Sam Bernard: HELLTRACK? MORE! MORE! MORE!
Whether you’ve been a fan since 1986 or are discovering Cru Jones for the first time, HELLTRACK gives readers another chance to return to one of BMX’s most beloved worlds. If Bernard gets his wish, fans will finish the graphic novel wanting exactly what he does: “MORE! MORE! MORE!”
