DEBATABLE 102 – My Favorite Films: SNEAKERS with AJ Wiley and Paul Smith

AJ WILEY and PAUL SMITH, of the Gobbledygeek Podcast, join me to kick off a new series I’m dubbing “My Favorite Films.” These are movies that shaped me as a young lad and teenager. And, the first installment is Phil Alden Robinson’s 1992 caper film, Sneakers. We talk the stellar cast, how ahead of its time the film’s exploration of national security is, Robert Redford’s spy movie arc, and differing opinions on how well executed or dated the movie is. AJ and Paul are always some of my favorite guests to have on. Enjoy!

if looks could kill

DEBATABLE 103 – My Favorite Films: IF LOOKS COULD KILL with James David Patrick

JAMES DAVID PATRICK, creator of the James Bond Social Media Project, #Bond_age_, returns to chat about William Dear’s 1991 movie, If Looks Could Kill. We talk Grieco, and the state of television and the James Bond series that created a perfect storm for this film to be made. We also touch on American spy movies, ILCK’s appeal for 15-year-old boys, and the power of nostalgia when considering one’s own favorite films. Great talk!

a few good men

DEBATABLE 106 – My Favorite Films: A FEW GOOD MEN with Daniel Tayag

DANIEL TAYAG joins me to discuss Rob Reiner’s 1992 film, A Few Good Men. We discuss our exposure to Aaron Sorkin’s unmistakable writing, how the film captures a heightened reality of military law and its Maryland/DC setting, the superb performances of the ensemble cast, and the insane quotability of the movie itself. A lot of fun!

ravenous

DEBATABLE 107 – My Favorite Films: RAVENOUS with James McCormick

CriterionCast co-host and all-around cinephile, JAMES MCCORMICK, returns to the show to talk Antonia Bird’s 1999 horror-western-comedy, Ravenous. We discuss the troubled production, the excellent ensemble cast, the Spaghetti western influences, the indelible music, and how in the world this film doesn’t have a bigger following. Great talk with one of my favorite people!

just one of the guys

DEBATABLE 108 – My Favorite Films: JUST ONE OF THE GUYS with Fernando Madrigal

FERNANDO MADRIGAL, good friend and co-host of “All the Pieces Matter,” joins me to bring the “My Favorite Films” series to an end, at least for now. This time we’re talking 1985’s Just One of the Guys. We discuss its dated comedy, hard crushin’ on Joyce Hyser, the highs and lows of ‘80s cliches, the subversive feminism in the movie, how it deals with sexuality and transphobia, and the endless Buddy quotes! Always fun having Fernando on. Enjoy!
